First Professional Degree

                  
CURRICULUM LEADING TO THE DEGREE OF
                         DOCTOR OF DENTAL MEDICINE

The curriculum is designed to prepare general practitioner who are fully qualified to serve the needs of the entire Puerto Rican community in the area of oral health.  The study program leading to the degree of Doctor of Dental Medicine consists of four academic year.  During the Summer prior to the entrance to the first year, admitted students must attend a course on Comprehension of Professional Scientific Literature.

The curriculum is based on competencies (download competencies.pdf) and it is organized around four integrated curricular areas.  These areas are defined according to the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to achieve the competencies.

Biomedical Sciences
, includes fundamental knowledge of the development, structure, function and mechanism of disease of the human body.

Assessment and Diagnosis
comprises the knowledge, skills and values related to the assessment of normal structure and diagnosis of the abnormalities, diseases and dysfunctions of the orofacial complex in the child, adolescent, adult, geriatric and special patients.

Prevention and Treatment includes the knowledge, skills and values related to the prevention and treatment of abnormalities, diseases and dysfunctions of the orofacial complex of the child, adolescent, adult, geriatric and special patients. 

Professional Development and Management of the Dental Practice is related to the development of the individual as a professional and his role in the community.  It includes, among other, the concepts of practice management, ethical and legal concepts related to the profession, exposure control and risk management and personnel utilization.

A minimum of 144 hours is elective courses are required for graduation.
